Background

Laura Willa Kanter (she/they) is a compassionate and dedicated social worker with over two decades of experience in counseling, advocacy, and community leadership. Specializing in LGBTQ+ affirmative therapy, trauma-informed care, and social justice-focused mental health support, Laura provides a warm, affirming space where clients can feel truly seen and heard.

A former university lecturer and policy advocate, Laura blends evidence-based therapy with a deep understanding of identity, resilience, and social systems. Their work is rooted in the belief that everyone deserves a space to heal, grow, and embrace their authentic self.

Laura understands how life’s challenges—especially trauma, stress, and societal pressures—can impact mental well-being. With a strengths-based and client-centered approach, they strive to create a safe and supportive environment where clients feel empowered to explore their emotions, develop coping strategies, and move toward healing.

Training & Approach

Laura draws from evidence-based modalities, including psychodynamic therapy and trauma-informed care, tailoring each session to meet the unique needs and goals of their clients. They specialize in working with individuals facing anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship challenges, life transitions, and personal growth.

At the heart of Laura’s practice is the belief that therapy should be a place of connection, support, and empowerment. They are passionate about working with individuals from diverse backgrounds, particularly LGBTQ+ clients and those navigating systemic barriers. Whether helping clients manage stress, heal from past wounds, or gain clarity and confidence, Laura offers a warm and affirming presence every step of the way.

Beyond therapy, Laura is deeply involved in community advocacy, education, and social justice efforts. They have led programs supporting LGBTQ+ youth, trained professionals in cultural competency, and fought for policies promoting equity and inclusion.

Laura’s goal is to provide a transformative and empowering therapy experience—one where clients can feel safe, valued, and supported as they work toward a more fulfilling and authentic life.

Laura Willa is under clinical supervision with Christine Block, PhD, LCSW-S.
